Discussion 2 Emerging Technologies

A rationale for why you selected each technology
Today’s teachers are finding new and better ways to engage their students in the learning that goes on in classrooms. One of the ways to stay relevant is to use technology to their advantage. It connects to the world that our students live in and brings high levels of interest. The connected world is where our students live and finding ways for learning to take place in avenues like social media is a way for our students to relate to our curriculum. One of the more exciting apps that have recently made its way onto the social media scene is Periscope. Periscope is a live, interactive video streaming app which allows users to broadcast media and footage while their followers engage in their content at the same time. When used in the classroom, students are able to connect with the world in real-time and interact with any of the content that is made available to them (Arbogash & Rudolph, 2016).
Two examples of how you might incorporate each technology into your professional practice
With Periscope, teachers can broadcast content live to their students with the ability to tailor the video on the spot in response to student questions and conversations. Flipping a lesson, re-teaching a strategy, or communicating classroom information all in real-time now gives the teacher the power to personalize easily instruction through the interactivity of this app. Students on the other hand, now have the power to pick the path of their own learning.
One way would be to conduct live on the spot interviews with various individuals or subject matter experts that can have a major impact on the class. Imagine trying to explain a difficult topic, or reviewing something that is relevant to the class. With Periscope, you could essentially have a live broadcast where you interview someone and get a lesson going on the fly. For example using periscope could teach a class of changing your oil, fixing a computer, programming, cooking, or any topic that can be taught on the fly.
With Periscope, you can teach a face to face class, and while that is happening, you can connect a GoPro camera, link it to your app, and be able to give a more dynamic class for students outside of the classroom. Essentially, this could do away with the absence excuse that students often use for missing a class. Student absent is not normally a good thing, but by using Periscope, you can live broadcast to any student that is not in class, or simply just give a class to students all over the world.

The second technology I am choosing, which I am less interested in but am including, because you asked for two pieces of technology as per the assignment is openTokRTC. OpenTOKRTC means “Real Time Communication,” this is a piece of open software that allows real-time streaming video. I'm thinking this can be used in a similar vein to Periscope. OpenTokRTC is an open sourced app that features multiparty video chat capabilities using WebRTC. It is the simplest way to video chat with the people you love, simply type in a room name and start video chatting! On a browser, join the chat by going to https://OpenTokRTC.com (iTunes, n.d.).
Why don’t you just host a live class, and show students in other areas of the world. You can use this technology on the internet, or on your smart device in the form of an app.

  4. I like that concept. We see it in movies like Star wars and GI Joe. Only they use holograms.
